What is Timber Procurement? 

Timber Procurement is the purchasing of mature pine trees to produce pine lumber.

    Working within a radius of approximately 50 miles from the sawmill, Burt Lumber Company employs two full time foresters, Barry Goolsby and Alex Mason.  Both have earned degrees in forestry from the University of Georgia and are certified by the state as Master Timber Harvesters.  These designations require that they be both knowledgeable of and in compliance with all state and federal forest quality regulations.  It also requires the attendance of periodic Continuing Education courses held at the University of Georgia.  These courses offer new techniques and credits towards their continuing Registered Forester Certification in the State of Georgia.

    In order to acquire the most accurate information possible, Barry and Alex use some of the latest technology available.  For mapping, a GPS (Global Positioning System) is used in conjunction with GPS/GIS software.  A Relaskop is used for collecting data and a data recorder is used to store the collected data.

    Barry and Alex are continually striving to assist landowners in making informative and wise decisions in the development of their timberlands using Best Management Practices.
